6 Sep 2024
As the leaves change and the crisp air of autumn sweeps through Kentucky, Burkesville prepares to celebrate a beloved tradition that has stood the test of time. This September, the Cumberland River Bluegrass Festival marks its 28th year, inviting music lovers from near and far to experience the heart and soul of bluegrass in the picturesque setting of Dr. Joseph Schickel Memorial Park.
A Celebration of Bluegrass and Community
The Cumberland River Bluegrass Festival is more than just an annual event; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of a community united by music. This festival has been a cornerstone of Burkesville’s cultural landscape for nearly three decades, drawing generations of families, friends, and bluegrass enthusiasts to its hallowed grounds. Free admission and parking make it accessible to everyone, ensuring that the sounds of bluegrass continue to resonate across the hills and valleys of Cumberland County.
Bluegrass music is a time-honored tradition in this region, deeply rooted in everyday life's stories, struggles, and joys. It is not merely a genre of music but a way of life—a reflection of the resilience, faith, and camaraderie that define rural America. The Cumberland River Bluegrass Festival honors this legacy, offering a stage for seasoned and up-and-coming musicians to share their craft with a devoted audience.
A Lineup of Exceptional Talent
This year’s festival promises to be one of the most memorable yet, with a lineup of performers that showcases the diversity and richness of bluegrass music. The Chimney Rock Band will kick off the festivities on Thursday, setting the tone with their high-energy performance. The Lindsey Family, known for their harmonies and heartfelt songs, will grace the stage on both Thursday and Saturday, bringing their unique blend of traditional and contemporary bluegrass to the audience.
On Friday, the stage will light up with Kentucky Just for Us sounds, followed by the Finley River Boys, who will return for another set on Saturday. Cutter & Cash and The Kentucky Grass will also perform on Saturday, offering a perfect blend of instrumental virtuosity and soulful vocals. The festival will culminate with a performance by Williamson Branch, a family band whose dynamic stage presence and tight-knit harmonies have earned them acclaim nationwide.
More Than Music: A Tradition of Craftsmanship
In addition to the music, the festival continues its cherished tradition of the quilt block contest. This year’s theme, “Old Cars/Trucks,” invites participants to showcase their creativity on a 12 1/2 in x 12 1/2 in 100% cotton fabric block. Whether through appliqué, fabric paint, embroidery, or piecing, each block represents a piece of the community’s heritage. Quilters can submit their blocks by Thursday night, with winners announced on Friday. These blocks will be assembled into a quilt and given away at next year’s festival, ensuring that this tradition lives on.
