Planning Our Work and Working Our Plan

In the spring of 2013, the Burkesville/Cumberland County Industrial Authority, Cumberland County Fiscal Court, City Council of Burkesville, Cumberland Chamber of Commerce and the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service in Cumberland County were awarded a grant from the Appalachian Regional Commission and the Center for Rural Development to develop a strategic plan for the Cumberland County community. As a result of the funding, a planning committee was formed to provide leadership for the development of a strategic plan. The goal of the project was to create a shared vision for the future based on community input. Starting in April 2013 and continuing into September, a series of community forums in addition to strategic planning committee meetings were held. The community forums were hosted by different community organizations including the Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce, Cumberland County Tourism Commission, Cumberland County Extension Council, Cumberland County Homemakers Council, Cumberland County 4-H Council, and the Cumberland County High School Student Council. During the forums, participants were asked a series of questions that helped to facilitate productive discussion about the future of Cumberland County. Forums participants were also given publications developed by the Community and Economic Initiative of Kentucky (CEDIK), which included data specific to Cumberland County. The publications included data on the local economic, the community health care system, agriculture and food, the retail sector and the local workforce. In addition to community forums, an online survey was used to collect additional input from people who were not able to attend the public’s .
